Dell's Presence in India to Double
Tuesday, 21 March 2006
According to the Associated Press, Michael Dell, Chairman of Dell Inc., announced today that Dell plans to increase the number of its workers in India to 20,000, thereby doubling its employee numbers in the fast-growing market by 2009.
The bulk of the new workers will come through call-centers, of which Dell currently has four in India. However, AP says, Dell’s product-testing center and a planned manufacturing plant are also anticipated to be taking in new hires. At present, the company also runs a global software development center in India. All-told, Dell employs approximately 10,000 workers in its Indian facilities. .
Although many Western firms have moved various departments to India and other countries overseas in order to save on spending, Dell seems to have an additional goal in mind: that of participating in the swift market growth in the computer industry taking place in India, AP reports. Dell also plans to establish a manufacturing center in India, which may encourage its computer sales in that country.
According to AP, Kevin Rollins, Dell’s CEO, visited New Delhi earlier this year. During the trip, he remarked that Dell was not solely interested in the acquisition of fresh talent, but also sought to take advantage of the growing Indian market for computers.
