Holiday Online Spending Up 23%

Non-travel spending during the first 46 days of the 2005 holiday season – Tuesday, November 1 through Friday, December 16 – totaled $15.86 billion, which was a 23-percent increase over the $12.85 billion posted during the same corresponding period in 2004, according to comScore Networks.

For the year-to-date as of last Friday, non-travel online spending was $78.6 billion compared to $63.4 billion a year ago, according to comScore. That is a year-to-date increase of 24 percent.

The global information provider and consultancy also reported that Monday, December 12 has been, to date, the busiest online shopping day of the 2005 holiday-shopping season. On that day, consumers spent a record $556 million online for non-travel purchases.

That day was followed by Tuesday, December 13; Tuesday, December 6; Wednesday, December 14; Thursday, December 8; Monday, December 5; Wednesday, December 7; and Friday, December 9.

The Monday after Thanksgiving – referred to widely in the press as “Black Monday” – actually came in as the ninth busiest day, ahead of Wednesday, November 30 in tenth place.
