Mercantile Bankshares Corporation announced that it has selected Carton Donofrio Partners, a Baltimore-based, full-service marketing communications agency, as its agency of record.

"This selection follows an extensive agency review process that considered a number of highly qualified agencies throughout the mid-Atlantic," said Josias J. Cromwell, Marketing Director at Mercantile Bankshares Corporation. "We need a communications partner who will help us build and capitalize on the strength of the Mercantile brand. We believe that Carton Donofrio Partners displays the combination of experience and strategic thinking needed to accomplish this."

Mercantile's recent focus has been on enhancements to its traditional community-based banking platform with further emphasis on service quality for its commercial client base and broader, more consistent product offerings at the retail level. Mercantile has continued an aggressive growth effort in the vibrant Washington market. Earlier this year Mercantile acquired Community Bank of Northern Virginia and merged it into its Washington affiliate, Mercantile Potomac Bank.

As Mercantile's marketing partner, Carton Donofrio will develop and implement an integrated marketing program that both communicates the value of the overall Mercantile brand and supports the business goals of the 13 banking operations and major business lines, including the substantial Investment & Wealth Management division. Support will include advertising, public relations, interactive media and direct mail. The scope of work also includes collateral development and brand consulting on branch design.

"We are honored to serve as agency of record for Mercantile, a venerable brand that has positively affected the lives of individuals and businesses in our community for many decades," said Chuck Donofrio, chief executive officer of Carton Donofrio Partners.
